I had the privilege of photographing numerous artists a few days ago. Residents at Denver's Metro Path Care Center visited the Denver Art Society in an effort to display their creative ingenuity. The center, in the midst of transitioning itself into a viable art center within its community, is reaching out to creative minds of all types. The Metro Path Care members are a reminder that all art is beautiful. What makes it that way is that their expressions come straight from the heart. The images may not be Da Vinci-esque, but their message certainly is.
I have often labored in my attempt to express myself artistically, often resigning myself to failure without any attempt whatsoever. Shame on me! I have a lot to learn, and I learned some valuable lessons attending this gathering. Individuals with far greater challenges that life has given them than me, proudly displayed their work. Spirit was certainly working from within as I looked at their proud faces. It got me to thinking that the only true failure is the failure to try!
Vincent drew a personally signed, stick figure for me and also imitated Elvis and Johnny Cash. Denise simply drew a heart engraved with "I love you." The messages were unmistakeable, everyone is an artist in their own right, just waiting to be unleashed. And every piece of art emanating from the heart is a thing of beauty. Best of all, every image from the heart is an expression of spirit. So listen to your heart! You will feel a freedom of expression like never before. Express yourself, and and get to know your inner self.
